The winner, crowned by the newly engaged reigning Miss America Katie Stam, gets a $50,000 scholarship and embarks on a yearlong run with the title to represent the organization and raise awareness for her chosen platform.

The 89-year-old pageant will be shown live on cable network TLC from 8/7c.

A 22-year-old woman who represented Virginia was named the winner Saturday night in the 2010 Miss America pageant.

At the competition, held in Las Vegas, Caressa Cameron of Fredericksburg, a Virginia Commonwealth University communications major, won one of the oldest and most celebrated titles in American popular culture.

"Take away the TV, take away the video games, set some standards for our children!" she answered unhesitatingly in the interview portion of the contest, in which she was asked what to do about the epidemic of childhood obesity.
As winner of the pageant, which is in its 88th year, she is to receive a $50,000 scholarship.
Her talent was listed as singing, (vocal pop) and Saturday night she sang the "Dreamgirls" ballad "Listen." Her platform was listed as AIDS education.

She went to Massaponax High School before VCU, and has been a dean's list student. Her career ambition is to work as an anchor for a television news station, according to the site.

Jen Corey, 22, Miss D.C., was in the top 10. Cameron follows two other winners from Virginia, Nicole Johnson in 1999 and Kylene Barker in 1979.

The official Miss America 2010 Winner was Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron. But the real Miss America 2010 Winner was Rush Limbaugh dancing to Lady Gaga, which is becoming a YouTube and Blip.tv hit.
First, Limbaugh, the Couch Potato Conservative blowhard and radio star - who made news first by being named a judge in the wake of his blast of a female caller "April", telling her to get the "tampon out of her ears" (as he was insulting Haiti after the earthquake) - was named judge of the pageant.

Second, Rush Limbaugh, discovering he was happy to be alive in the wake of his unfortunate chest pain incident on New Year's Eve morning, got off a what can only by called a "dry heave" of a dance to Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" during the pageant. It was a hilarious scene worthy of analysis on video:
All kidding aside, it's great to see Rush Limbaugh getting lose and enjoying life. No word on Lady Gaga's opinion of Limbaugh's dancing. But if you're interested in what a "dry heave" dance is, it was created by the writers of Seinfeld and done by Julia Louise-Dryfus as "Elaine" and seen here

argentina earthquake

argentina earthquake

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina --World was in morn for the Haiti earth quake that shook the whole country and killed millions of people, now there are nows that earthquake monitors say a 6.3 magnitude temblor has shaken the ocean floor between South America and Antarctica, too deep and far from land to cause any damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit at 8 a.m. (1200 GMT) Sunday in Drake Passage, about 220 miles (354 kilometers) southeast of Ushuaia, Argentina, at a depth of 13 miles (21 kilometers).

german shepherd

german shepherd

A family's pet German Shepherd dog was fatally shot in Edison Park by an off-duty Chicago police officer last Monday. Reportedly, the dog growled and lunged at the female officer who feared for her safety when walking her own dog. There haven't been any eye witness reports given beyond the off-duty cop's report. See video below of German Shepherd dog and another dog.

The dog's owner, Laura Bravo, claims that the dog (named Malachi) usually is within their home and yard behind a locked gate. She believed that the gate lock froze, so it didn't close properly, which allowed the dog to escape. Bravo said she and her children ran after the dog, but when they found it, it was dead on the street.

Laura Bravo said their pet German Shepherd, Malachi, was a big dog, but not considered aggressive. She believes the off-duty officer's dog was not on a leash at the time of the shooting, and that Malachi was going after the other dog, not the officer.

The video here shows a German Shepherd on a leash being taunted by another dog without a leash. Some states do not have leash laws, allowing dogs to roam freely as they choose. Shepherds are considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds. They also tend to be protective, but mostly when provoked or defending their property/owners. There are also stats which claim Shepherds are one of the most likely dogs to bite humans, although this is not scientifically proven.

Local churches and other organizations are working to help raise money for Haiti relief and recovery efforts after the devastating impact of Tuesday’s earthquake. Also, families checking on the safety and well being of loved ones in Haiti can contact the U.S. Department of State at 1-888-407-4747.
Here are some of the efforts currently underway to help:
According to co-manager Chad Maddox, Rome’s Kroger started collecting money Thursday and will continue the effort through the rest of this week.
Customers can round up their bill to the nearest dollar, he said. For example, if the charge ended up being $7.20, the overall purchase could be rounded up to $8, and the 80 cents would go towards Haiti relief efforts. Or customers can just make a cash donation of any amount along with their purchase.
First Baptist Church of Rome is asking for donations that will go to the victims through the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. For more information on how to help, call 706-291-6850 or visit the cooperative’s Web site at www.thefellowship.info.
First Methodist Church of Rome and Trinity United Methodist Church are both donating funds to the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Grant Magness, the youth pastor at Trinity, said the church has already donated $1,600 to the committee, and will hold a car wash on Jan. 24 from noon to 4 p.m. to help raise more funds. detroit auto show 2010

detroit auto show 2010

After a tumultuous year of poor sales, bankruptcies and the collapse of industry giants, the 2010 North American International Auto Show opens this week in Detroit. This year the buzz is all about electric cars -- hopefully a sign that things are looking up in Motor City. The Detroit Free Press explains: “Rebuilding in Detroit starts with cars, with sheet metal and engines, leather and plastics, and some new things, too: In-car technology like you've never seen before and more engines than ever powered by electricity instead of gasoline, or, more often, a combination of both.”

Indeed, a number of electric-powered vehicles are set to debut at this year’s Detroit Auto Show as either concepts or cars slated for production. Among them are the highly-anticipated Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf -- which will be made available to consumers later this year.

According to the Seattle Times, electric versions of the Volvo C30, Fiat 500 and BMW 1-Series will also be present in Detroit this week. Just yesterday, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz announced that Cadillac will soon begin production on the electric-powered Converj -- which debuted as a concept vehicle at last year’s Detroit Auto Show.
