german shepherd

german shepherd

A family's pet German Shepherd dog was fatally shot in Edison Park by an off-duty Chicago police officer last Monday. Reportedly, the dog growled and lunged at the female officer who feared for her safety when walking her own dog. There haven't been any eye witness reports given beyond the off-duty cop's report. See video below of German Shepherd dog and another dog.

The dog's owner, Laura Bravo, claims that the dog (named Malachi) usually is within their home and yard behind a locked gate. She believed that the gate lock froze, so it didn't close properly, which allowed the dog to escape. Bravo said she and her children ran after the dog, but when they found it, it was dead on the street.

Laura Bravo said their pet German Shepherd, Malachi, was a big dog, but not considered aggressive. She believes the off-duty officer's dog was not on a leash at the time of the shooting, and that Malachi was going after the other dog, not the officer.

The video here shows a German Shepherd on a leash being taunted by another dog without a leash. Some states do not have leash laws, allowing dogs to roam freely as they choose. Shepherds are considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds. They also tend to be protective, but mostly when provoked or defending their property/owners. There are also stats which claim Shepherds are one of the most likely dogs to bite humans, although this is not scientifically proven.
