american samoa tsunami video

american samoa tsunami video

IT WAS just before 7am Samoan time yesterday when the earth groaned and the trees shook. That was the only warning many of the people on the islands of Samoa and American Samoa would have of what was to come.

Deep under the ocean, somewhere midway between the two island groups, a shift in the restless Pacific plates had triggered a major earthquake - magnitude measuring 8.0 to 8.3 on the Richter scale. Sleepers were shaken awake. Early risers watched as the sea suddenly retreated, the tide sucking the water way down the beach, the inhale before the exhale. There was little time to run.

In some places alarms sounded. In others, local men began shouting and banging on gas cylinders - sounding them like church bells - in an urgent, improvised alert. Some locals dragged their heels, thinking it was just another tsunami trial alarm. When realisation dawned, the panic came.

Most Samoans live by the water, which provides their livelihoods, and where tourists are drawn to a string of exotic resorts capitalising on Samoa's appeal as a remote Polynesian paradise, halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand.

Melbourne school teachers John and Robyn Jaffe, making the most of their South Pacific escape, had already long since left their luxury hotel room at the Virgin Cove Resort.

Robyn Jaffe had just finished a shower in the rainforest fringing the beach when she felt the rumble under her feet. But it wasn't until locals began running past her that she grew alarmed and scrambled up on to a water tank for safety. From her perch she saw her husband picked up by the wave as it pushed into the jungle and dragged him through the rocks and undergrowth.

John Jaffe, who teaches at Lilydale High School, guesses the wall of water was maybe 12 metres high when he first sighted it way out on the horizon - a ''very tall, beautiful, strong wave''. And terrifying.

It took two minutes, perhaps, to hit the beach, he says, mercifully losing some of its ferocity as it crossed the reef, but still powering on to the land so strong and so fast that all he could do was submit, instinctively turning into himself for safety. ''I just tried to keep my body small so I wouldn't break an arm or a leg,'' he said. He survived with scratches and bruises.

The Jaffes found shelter at a nearby primary school along with fellow resort guests including New Zealand bride-to-be Kimberly Brown who, with her fiance, Preston McNeil, was feeling lucky to be alive. The first they knew of the danger was the deep, distant rumble. The sound materialised as a giant wave with a foaming head, with more waves coming over the top, building to the point that ''all of a sudden you realised there was just absolutely nothing you could do, and we just ran screaming to the van'', said Ms Brown.

But the wave hit, the van filled with water and the windows smashed. Photographs and video footage shows trucks and cars were pushed up to 100 metres inland and into buildings by the tsunami. The couple, along with fellow New Zealander Melissa Sharplin, made a decision to sprint into the forest to higher ground.

A series of five massive waves reportedly smashed into the islands in the minutes after the earthquake struck at 6.48am, churning the deep waters and triggering the tsunami that by last night was estimated to have claimed at least 100 lives, including at least four Australians - including an unnamed six-year-old girl, a Tasmanian woman, Maree Blacker, who had gone to the islands with her husband, John, to celebrate her 50th birthday, and secondary school teacher Vivien Hodgins, 55, of Ballarat.

Villages and resorts were flattened.

Anna Tui Annandale - one of Samoa's wealthiest women and co-owner of the exclusive Sinalei resort with her husband, Joe - drowned while she struggled to save children in the village of Poutasi, according to her friend and Deputy Samoan Prime Minister Misa Telefoni. Her husband was critically injured. It is feared many children, unable to save themselves as the water rushed in, are among the dead.

Sea Breeze resort owner Wendy Booth said she and her husband were nearly washed away by the wave. ''My husband and I just hung on to each other and the handrail …The force of the wave pushed furniture through the ceiling.''

New Zealand tourist Graeme Ansell, in the village of Faofao on Upolu Island, believed to be the worst affected, told New Zealand radio from a hill near the capital, Apia: ''The whole village has been wiped out. ''There's not a building standing.'' Roads were jammed and communications collapsed.

Among the people who escaped the wave were the cast and crew of the latest season of the CBS reality show Survivor. The network said no one from the program had been harmed.

Ray Hunt, a Melbourne man working locally, said he believed that 40 local people had died in one village alone. ''It's total chaos at the hospital. Bodies are coming in from all over the place; doctors trying to tend the injured,'' he said.

''You live in Samoa, this is supposed to be paradise. But I can tell you, it's not paradise. It's hell on earth.''

iphone picture messaging update

iphone picture messaging update
Apple iPhone

The iPhone received a heavily-requested new feature on Friday when AT&T and Apple enabled multimedia messaging, including sending picture and video messages to other phones.

The MMS capability was enabled by sending a "carrier settings update" through iTunes. If you click "Check for Update" in iTunes, it will appear. Load the update, restart your phone and your iPhone will have MMS.

Apple's picture messaging interface is as elegant as the company's other software. Picture messaging is built into the Messages app used for SMS. The app now has a new "camera" button that lets you take a photo or video, or attach a photo or video stored on the iPhone. I sent and received picture messages from AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile phones without a problem.

When you receive a picture or video message, you can expand or play it by tapping on the thumbnail image in the Messages app, or hold down your finger on the picture to copy it. You can then jump over to your Photos app to paste it into your camera album.

(For a visual walkthrough, see our slideshow.)

iPhone owners have been clamoring for MMS since the phone first launched in 2006; picture messaging has been available on many other phones since 2003. Apple announced the feature for iPhones in June, but AT&T took several months to implement it. AT&T released additional details about the MMS feature on Thursday.

Transmitting video messages, though, may further tax AT&T's already struggling 3G network. As reported by many media including The New York Times, AT&T's network is having trouble handling the massive amounts of data consumed by iPhone users. AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said the carrier was ready to handle as many video messages as iPhone owners were ready to send. That network may get an assist from AT&T's microcell, which will offload some of the AT&T network traffic.

"As you know, we have been preparing for the MMS capability for months and we feel confident that the experience is going to be good for our customers," Siegel said.

19 lb baby indonesia

19 lb baby indonesia

Shockingly, a 19 lb baby born in Indonesia on Monday is not the biggest baby ever born. News of the huge infant’s birth became a hot topic on the Net this week, but the Guinness Book of World Records says he’s a lightweight compared to the largest baby on record.
A woman in Jakarta, Indonesia, identified only as Ani gave birth to the 19 lb baby boy via caesarean section on Monday. One of the mother’s doctors has speculated the huge size of the baby is due to the mother’s diabetes. High glucose levels reportedly can cause abnormally large growth in fetuses.
The so far unnamed baby boy weighed in at an astounding 19.2 pounds and was 2 feet long at birth. Although he is the largest baby ever on record in Indonesia, the baby boy didn’t quite make the world record.
The Guinness Book of World Records lists the biggest baby ever born weighed more than 23 lbs at birth and was born in 1879.

florida bar exam results

florida bar exam results

Information Regarding Grade Release
Please do not call the board or the court regarding your examination results. Results cannot be obtained over the telephone under any circumstances. The following information is provided to assist you with questions you may have relating to your examination results.

How are General Bar Examination grades released?
The Florida Supreme Court releases General Bar Examination results on their website and authorizes the mailing of the results by the Florida Board of Bar Examiners.

How do I access my examination results on the court’s website?
Click on the link leading to the examination results, then find the range of bar applicant numbers that your number falls within and click on the corresponding link. Your number is listed as the “file number” on correspondence sent to you by the board. If the file number on your correspondence starts with an “A” or a “B”, it is an old number and you need to find more recent correspondence. If you cannot locate any correspondence from the board and therefore cannot locate your file number, do not call the board or the Florida Supreme Court, as that information is never given out over the phone. You will have to await your results by U.S. mail.

What do I do if I cannot locate my file number on the court’s website?
If you cannot locate your file number on the court’s website, you may have attempted to access the results before all scores were posted; restart your browser and attempt to find your file number again. If you still cannot locate your file number, re-check your most recent correspondence from the board’s office to make sure you are using the correct number. If you are still unable to locate your number, contact the board’s office.

When will my examination results be mailed to me?
They will be mailed to your current mailing address on file with the board on the same day pass/fail results are posted on the Internet.

What if my address has changed?
If your address has changed, you must use the Change of Address (PDF – 60k) form to request in writing that your examination results be sent to your new address.

Did I pass the examination?
You can pass the examination either by the Individual or Overall method. If you did not pass both Part A and Part B individually, but did pass the “Overall” examination, meaning the average of your scores from Part A and Part B was at least 136, then you did successfully complete the General Bar Examination.

Why was I not “Authorized to be sworn in”?
In order to be “Authorized to be Sworn in”, you must pass the General Bar Examination and the MPRE, and your background investigation must be complete. If you have not been authorized to be sworn in, the letter containing your examination results will advise you of the reasons you have not been authorized to take the oath.

Who can administer my oath?
If you are authorized to be sworn in, your oath and all information needed to be sworn in will be mailed to you with a letter from the Clerk of the Supreme Court of Florida. You may be sworn in by any judge, notary, or other person authorized to administer oaths of office. It is not necessary to attend an induction ceremony or otherwise travel to Florida to be sworn in.

Where do I send my completed oath?
If you are authorized to be sworn in, you must send your properly executed oath to the board’s office at 1891 Eider Court, Tallahassee, FL 32399-1750 within 90 days of the letter authorizing you to be sworn in. If you wish to order a certificate of admission, enclose your check for $22.00, payable to the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. The certificate will be mailed to your address on file with the board’s office in approximately eight weeks.

When will I receive my bar number and how do I practice law in the meantime?
Once the board has received your executed oath, your name will be forwarded to The Florida Bar’s membership records department. A membership package containing your bar number will be mailed to you from The Florida Bar, usually within three weeks. In the interim, you may write “Pending” on filings requiring your Florida Bar number and you may use the letter from the board acknowledging your oath as proof of your membership. You must use the name you were sworn in under to sign legal documents.

Once The Florida Bar has assigned a bar number, you can find it by entering your name in the space indicated on their website’s Find A Lawyer page.

What do I need to do to attend an induction ceremony?
Information regarding the induction ceremonies, including an election notice, is included with a letter from the Clerk of the Supreme Court of Florida. You are not required to attend an induction ceremony; however, many applicants have found attendance at the ceremony to be a valuable experience. In order for your name to appear on the program, you must advise the board, in writing, no later than 10:00 a.m. on the Thursday prior to the ceremony that you plan to attend. After that time, you may still attend the ceremony, but your name will not be on the list provided to the court.

Can I attend an induction ceremony if I have already been sworn in?
You may attend a ceremony even if you are sworn in prior to the ceremony. You will not complete a new oath at the conclusion of the ceremony

love happens soundtrack

love happens soundtrack

Love Happens starts as a pleasantly bland character study and ends as the unequivocal worst romantic comedy of the year. For its first two acts, the film is deceptively sincere in what seems to be an attempt to tell a quiet story of love and redemption, albeit through a conventional lens. Turns out the filmmakers were pulling their punches for an incessant cavalcade of sanctimonious resolutions and nauseating emotional pandering. Love does happen, but the only emotion that happened to me while watching this movie was, to put it mildly, "extreme discomfort."

Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston headline the film, though it is really Eckhart's story, if for no other reason than Aniston is treated as a sideshow. The actress, who has been truly great in past work, is the monotone window dressing to Eckhart's over-emotional lost soul. He plays Burke, a popular self-help guru and megalomaniac-in-the-making who is so out of touch with his own self-empowerment strategies that he downs a few glasses of vodka before each speaking engagement. Aniston is Eloise, a humble florist (yeah, right) who writes large words on hotel walls in neon pink marker. Why? Because it's so pointless, it must be meaningful. But it's not; it's actually just vandalism. Eloise and her big words are clearly Burke's savior, if only he can work out his labyrinthine mess of a screwed up life.

You might be asking yourself, "Haven't we seen this all before?" Why, yes, we have. Love Happens is one of those movies that's made up of the recycled parts of other equally cloying "Wounded Man Lives Contradictory Life" movies, those emotional melodramas where the hero is successful at helping others but is unable to help himself. Burke is a classic Wounded Man: He exudes confidence and wisdom on the outside, but harbors secrets -- deep, dark secrets -- on the inside. We know his wife died in a tragic car accident, but what were the real circumstances behind that crash? Martin Sheen shows up to fill about five total minutes of screen time as Burke's blustering ex-Marine father-in-law, who turns up in the beginning for one scene of aloof disapproval, then pops up again at the end, just in time for the reconciliation, but neither scene reveals anything of substance about the characters as much as they reveal nifty name recognition. "Hey, there's Martin Sheen!" we say at the beginning. Later, we say, "Hey, there he is again! This time he's crying!"

The characters wander about as if there is some grand depth to their presence, but each one is glossed over in such a shapeless manner that we can't begin to care about any of them. Judy Greer, Patron Saint of rom-com best buds, is given such short shrift we barely remember she's in the movie; Dan Fogler dials down his usual manic nature as Burke's publicist, who is simultaneously evil businessman and genuine friend; and the great John Carroll Lynch, as a grieving dad who is skeptical about Burke's self-help axioms, imbues his character with much deeper emotion than the screenplay deserves. Director/co-writer Brandon Camp, in his first feature, shoves the intended power of these characters down the audience's throat at every opportunity. But when they cry, it feels forced. When they speak, it doesn't resonate as even remotely truthful. When Aniston tells Eckhart late in the film that her life is "an everyday experiment in very bad decisions," we don't care, because we don't know anything about this person other than the surface quirks.

Love Happens never hits a successful stride. It merely hovers near the ground while the actors go through the motions. What's extraordinary is how quickly and sharply the film's badness shifts from benign to malignant. In search of some overwrought emotional truth, the film jumps off the deep end of manipulation, with a browbeating of false emotional payoffs that worsen with each successive attempt. As if that weren't enough, the film still isn't over -- it must first detour through a strange side plot involving the theft of an old pet bird (don't ask), then veer back on course just in time for Burke's onstage meltdown where everyone cries, a family reunites, and slow alt-rock swells on the soundtrack. I would say all that's missing is the Slow Clap, but it's got that too.

Something else happens, too.

As the Holy month of Ramadan nears an end, Muslims worldwide have flocked to the Grand Mosque, Kaaba located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia to pay their pilgrimage and render their duty towards fulfilling one of the five pillars of Islam.

Essential to Muslims are the five pillars of Islam, including the ritual of fasting during the month of Ramadan, where Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and engaging in sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk.

Fasting is prescribed to all Muslims for several reasons; first and foremost it teaches us to remember the people deprived of the basic necessities in life and learn the importance of Zak?h,

Zak?h (Zak?t), one of the Five Pillars of Islam, is the giving of a small percentage of one's possessions (surplus wealth) to charity generally to poor and needy Muslims individual…it serves principally as the welfare contribution to poor and deprived Muslims, although others may have a rightful share. It is the duty of an Islamic community not just to collect zakat but to distribute it fairly as well (Wikipedia)

During Ramadan, Muslims are urged to refrain not only from the basic food and drinks, but also practice patience and just behavior devoid of violence, harsh language, anger and other hostile mannerism.

From personal experience, these thirty days are one of the most rejuvenating days for Muslims, allowing each one of us to reflect and cherish every little thing that we are blessed with.

Left: Hundreds of thousands of Muslims pilgrims circle the Kaaba inside and outside the Grand Mosque during the last week of Ramadan in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009.

Here’s an interesting excerpt from my conversation with a fellow Muslim, Hesham Karim who has fasted this year after 6 years out of his 9 years living in the United States:

MK: Let’s begin with your experience, how has the journey been during the last couple of weeks?

HK: Fasting has taught me the importance of self-control. I don’t think there’s any another practice, which can teach you self-control better than this experience. I feel I have an inner strength and peace now, which I previously lacked.

MK: What was the hardest aspect of your experience from fasting this year?

HK: Overcoming my addictions; smoking and caffeine. However, through these last few days, I have somehow managed to conquer them both.

MK: Reflecting back, what had deterred you in the past from practicing this ritual?

HK: In the past, I used to always have some excuse or the other. From busy work schedules to my caffeine addictions, however now that I have seriously exerted an effort into this, it didn’t seem as hard as I had previously imagined. I guess every obstacle in life can be overcome with a sincere effort.

MK: On a broader level, do you feel you are better able to understand people who are living in grave poverty and suffering in starvation?

HK: Yes, fasting teaches you a lot about the less fortunate people and it gives you a sense of understanding of what these people might be going through every day in their lives. There’s always going to be someone less fortunate than you are and fasting urges you to fill those gaps by sharing and spending on others.

MK: How has fasting affected your belief in faith and religion?

HK: I think it’s the closeness with my religion that has encouraged me to take this step to fast, which in turn has brought me a lot closer to my religion and has taught me how faith can be used to do good to others. I fail to understand why the negative side of religion is practiced so openly, when there are such peaceful teachings ingrained within Islam. It’s a beautiful religion, which speaks of self-control, forgiveness and respect for everything, including the ground you walk on.

MK: Can these teachings be put into practice on a macro-level?

HK: Everyone can do something at every level. A plumber can take out $20 and donate it towards a good cause. From a business point of you, just like governments collect taxes to help build the infrastructure and economy of a nation, similarly if every person can take a little bit out of their savings to invest in the cause of other less fortunate ones there could be a change. Why leave this task only for the NGOs? Why can’t it be mandated in countries on an overall basis? Just like governments have budgets for healthcare, there could be budgets for eradicating the social divisions between people and classes. If the world’s population is 6 trillion and even half of the world’s richer countries can contribute $1, the other half can receive 3 trillion.

MK: What’re your plans for the grand feast – Eid ul-Fitr?

HK: *Smiles* –that’s always my favorite question. Depends on what my wife has on menu for the day!

As the countdown to Eid ul-Fitr begins, which is celebrated each year to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan, festivities have already begun all over the world. As Muslims from Chicago and Indonesia to Kenya and Iran co-join in celebrations in Mecca, let us resonate these festivities amongst the less fortunate ones by giving out a little bit from our shares of wealth.

In this act of sharing, let us keep our doors open for all underprivileged people –devoid of their religious, cultural and racial identities.

"And mankind is naught but a single nation." (Quran, 2:213)

Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare but very aggressive type of breast cancer in which the cancer cells block the lymph vessels in the skin of the breast. This type of breast cancer is called “inflammatory” because the breast often looks swollen and red, or “inflamed.” IBC accounts for 1 to 5 percent of all breast cancer cases in the United States (1). It tends to be diagnosed in younger women compared to non-IBC breast cancer. It occurs more frequently and at a younger age in African Americans than in Whites. Like other types of breast cancer, IBC can occur in men, but usually at an older age than in women. Some studies have shown an association between family history of breast cancer and IBC, but more studies are needed to draw firm conclusions (2).

2. What are the symptoms of IBC?

Symptoms of IBC may include redness, swelling, and warmth in the breast, often without a distinct lump in the breast. The redness and warmth are caused by cancer cells blocking the lymph vessels in the skin. The skin of the breast may also appear pink, reddish purple, or bruised. The skin may also have ridges or appear pitted, like the skin of an orange (called peau d'orange), which is caused by a buildup of fluid and edema (swelling) in the breast. Other symptoms include heaviness, burning, aching, increase in breast size, tenderness, or a nipple that is inverted (facing inward) (3). These symptoms usually develop quickly—over a period of weeks or months. Swollen lymph nodes may also be present under the arm, above the collarbone, or in both places. However, it is important to note that these symptoms may also be signs of other conditions such as infection, injury, or other types of cancer (1).

3. How is IBC diagnosed?

Diagnosis of IBC is based primarily on the results of a doctor's clinical examination (1). Biopsy, mammogram, and breast ultrasound are used to confirm the diagnosis. IBC is classified as either stage IIIB or stage IV breast cancer (2). Stage IIIB breast cancers are locally advanced; stage IV breast cancer is cancer that has spread to other organs. IBC tends to grow rapidly, and the physical appearance of the breast of patients with IBC is different from that of patients with other stage III breast cancers. IBC is an especially aggressive, locally advanced breast cancer.
Cancer staging describes the extent or severity of an individual's cancer. (More information on staging is available in the National Cancer Institute (NCI) fact sheet Staging: Questions and Answers at http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Detection/staging on the Internet.) Knowing a cancer's stage helps the doctor develop a treatment plan and estimate prognosis (the likely outcome or course of the disease; the chance of recovery or recurrence).

4. How is IBC treated?

Treatment consisting of chemotherapy, targeted therapy, surgery, radiation therapy, and hormonal therapy is used to treat IBC. Patients may also receive supportive care to help manage the side effects of the cancer and its treatment. Chemotherapy (anticancer drugs) is generally the first treatment for patients with IBC, and is called neoadjuvant therapy. Chemotherapy is systemic treatment, which means that it affects cells throughout the body. The purpose of chemotherapy is to control or kill cancer cells, including those that may have spread to other parts of the body.

After chemotherapy, patients with IBC may undergo surgery and radiation therapy to the chest wall. Both radiation and surgery are local treatments that affect only cells in the tumor and the immediately surrounding area. The purpose of surgery is to remove the tumor from the body, while the purpose of radiation therapy is to destroy remaining cancer cells. Surgery to remove the breast (or as much of the breast tissue as possible) is called a mastectomy. Lymph node dissection (removal of the lymph nodes in the underarm area for examination under a microscope) is also done during this surgery.

After initial systemic and local treatment, patients with IBC may receive additional systemic treatments to reduce the risk of recurrence (cancer coming back). Such treatments may include additional chemotherapy, hormonal therapy (treatment that interferes with the effects of the female hormone estrogen, which can promote the growth of breast cancer cells), targeted therapy (such as trastuzumab, also known as Herceptin®), or all three. Trastuzumab is administered to patients whose tumors overexpress the HER–2 tumor protein. More information about Herceptin and the HER–2 protein is available in the NCI fact sheet Herceptin® (Trastuzumab): Questions and Answers, which can be found at http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/therapy/herceptin on the Internet.

Supportive care is treatment given to improve the quality of life of patients who have a serious or life-threatening disease, such as cancer. It prevents or treats as early as possible the symptoms of the disease, side effects caused by treatment of the disease, and psychological, social, and spiritual problems related to the disease or its treatment. For example, compression garments may be used to treat lymphedema (swelling caused by excess fluid buildup) resulting from radiation therapy or the removal of lymph nodes. Additionally, meeting with a social worker, counselor, or member of the clergy can be helpful to those who want to talk about their feelings or discuss their concerns. A social worker can often suggest resources for help with recovery, emotional support, financial aid, transportation, or home care.

5. Are clinical trials (research studies with people) available? Where can people get more information about clinical trials?

Yes. The NCI is sponsoring clinical trials that are designed to find new treatments and better ways to use current treatments. Before any new treatment can be recommended for general use, doctors conduct clinical trials to find out whether the treatment is safe for patients and effective against the disease. Participation in clinical trials is a treatment option for many patients with IBC, and all patients with IBC are encouraged to consider treatment in a clinical trial.
People interested in taking part in a clinical trial should talk with their doctor. Information about clinical trials is available from the NCI's Cancer Information Service (CIS) (see below) at 1–800–4–CANCER and in the NCI booklet Taking Part in Cancer Treatment Research Studies, which is available at http://www.cancer.gov/publications on the Internet . This booklet describes how research studies are carried out and explains their possible benefits and risks. Further information about clinical trials is available at http://www.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials on the NCI's Web site. The Web site offers detailed information about specific ongoing studies by linking to PDQ®, the NCI's comprehensive cancer information database. The CIS also provides information from PDQ.

6. What is the prognosis for patients with IBC?

Prognosis describes the likely course and outcome of a disease—that is, the chance that a patient will recover or have a recurrence. IBC is more likely to have metastasized (spread to other areas of the body) at the time of diagnosis than non-IBC cases (3). As a result, the 5-year survival rate for patients with IBC is between 25 and 50 percent, which is significantly lower than the survival rate for patients with non-IBC breast cancer. It is important to keep in mind, however, that these statistics are averages based on large numbers of patients. Statistics cannot be used to predict what will happen to a particular patient because each person's situation is unique. Patients are encouraged to talk to their doctors about their prognosis given their particular situation

islam on capitol hill

islam on capitol hill

Islam on Capitol Hill will bring focus to Muslims in the US. American Muslims are set to gather in large number on Capitol Hill on next Friday to make their presence felt in the US. There are around seven million Muslims in the US and they say the time has arrived to make their presence felt in the country.
google_protectAndRun("ads_core.google_render_ad", google_handleError, google_render_ad);
So far Muslims have largely remained on the margins. They are not very active politically. But after 9/11 as focus turned on Islam and Muslims they have started to come out of closet and reach out to other communities.Islam in the United States started in the early 16th century, with Estevanico of Azamor being the first Muslim to enter the historical record in North America. Once very small, the Muslim population of the US increased greatly in the twentieth century, with much of the growth driven by rising immigration and widespread conversion. In 2005, more people from Islamic countries became legal permanent United States residents — nearly 96,000 — than in any year in the previous two decades.Recent Immigrant Muslims make up the majority of the total Muslim population. Native-born American Muslims are mainly African Americans who make up one-third of the total Muslim population. Many of these have converted to Islam during the last seventy years. Conversion to Islam in prison, and in large urban areas has also contributed to its growth over the years. American Muslims come from various backgrounds, and are one of the most racially diverse religious group in the United States according to a 2009 Gallup poll. A Pew report released in 2009 noted that nearly six-in-ten American adults see Muslims as being subject to a lot of discrimination, far more than Mormons, Atheists, or Jews.

He was named as Imam of the famous mosque Amr Ibn Al’Ass in Cairo in 1988. Every year, thousands of people rush to the mosque during Ramadan to attend the Tarawih prayers that are lead by him. Sheikh Muhammad Jebril is, also, a University professor in Jordan. He has plenty of complete recitations of Koran. He took part and organised several TV shows in lots of Arab channels around the Koranic theme. At last, Sheikh Jebril is especially admired for the quality of his “Dou’as Al QunĂ»t” (Invocations during prayer).SHEIKH AHMED DEWIDAR was born and raised in Rashid (Rosetta), a port city on the Mediterranean Sea coast. By age 12, he had memorized the Qur’an with the help of his father, Sheikh Sayed Al-Tantawy Dewidar. He later studied law at the University of Alexandria, and completed his master’s degree in Shariah (Islamic law) in 1993. Dewidar traveled to New Jersey nearly a decade ago to lead a small Muslim community in their nightly tarawih prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. Only six years later, he stood shoulder to shoulder with US President George W. Bush and UN Secretary General Kofi Anan at Ground Zero as Imam of the Islamic Center in Mid-Manhattan to speak on behalf of the Muslim community to condemn the September 11 attacks. Dewidar, an instructor at Manhattanville College, made New York his home and soon established the Islamic Center in mid-Manhattan.

Girl throws baseball back Funny Incident At Phillies Vs Nationals GameThis incident happened during a Phillies vs. Nationals game on Tuesday night. Steve Monforto spectacularly caught a foul ball from Jayson Werth at Citizens Bank Park, and then handed it to his young daughter.
Unfortunately for him, but much to the delight of surrounding fans and the commentators of the game, she promptly threw the ball back on to the field. And who can blame her, as that’s probably what she had been taught to do.
His reaction is great, hugging rather than shouting at his daughter. And he was apparently handed a ball signed by the team later to more than make up for it.
Spotted from the Today Show Twitter this morning, a video that will make you smile: adorable little girl takes the "don't take what doesn't belong to you" lesson to heart after her dad makes an amazing catch while at a baseball game.

whitney houston interview with oprah part 2

whitney houston interview with oprah part 2

In the second segment of her taped two-part comeback interview, mega star Whitney Houston described to Oprah her “crazy love” for her former husband, Bobby Brown, her descent into drug abuse, Brown’s abusive behavior and how her mother, daughter and firm spiritual beliefs saved her life.

Whitney admitted that she made herself weak to make her less successful husband feel strong. “I think somewhere inside, something happens to a man when a woman has that much control or has that much fame,” she explained. Ms. Houston described a relationship with Mr. Brown that was tempestuous. Once, she said, he spat in her face. Another time she hit him on the head so hard with a telephone receiver that he fell down bleeding, just as their daughter entered the room.

Ms. Houston attributed her drug abuse to her passion for her husband. “He was my drug,” she said. “I didn’t do anything without him. I wasn’t getting high by myself. It was me and him together, and we were partners, and that’s what my high was — him. He and I being together, and whatever we did, we did it together. No matter what, we did it together.”

According to the official Whitney Houston web site, Ms. Houston sold 170 million combined albums, singles and videos worldwide during her career with Arista Records. The Guinness Book Of World Records lists Whitney as music's "most awarded female artist of all time," with an amazing tally of 411 awards, representing a tally that is certainly topped by her two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 16 Billboard Music Awards, and 23 American Music Awards.

Part two of Oprah’s interview concluded with Whitney singing “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” , a song from her new CD, “I Look To You”. By the end of the show, Oprah was in tears and the audience was floored. Whitney is finally back and beautiful as ever.

PHOTOS! Here again are pictures of Raymond Clark engaged to Jennifer Hromadka who share a myspace account and a wedding website. Jennifer Hromadka and Raymond Clark details in Annie Le case are circling Tuesday night after police entered Clark’s home in Middletown, taking him into custody as a person of interest.

Jennifer Hromadka and Raymond Clark live together and share a joint myspace account preparing for their 2011 wedding. On the myspace account which Hromadka refers to Clark as her “wonderful boyfriend Ray.” Hromadka blogs:

“I love hanging out with Ray’s family (he has a great one) and playing with \[his sister\] Denise and \[her husband\] Shawn’s Adorable kids, Caleb and Brielle.”

But in May 2008, Jennifer Hromadka wrote on myspace about a rumor that Clark was having an affair with another Yale lab tech:

“My boyfriend, Ray, if you don’t know him, has no interest in any of the other girls at YARC as anything more than friends.

“He is a bit naive, doesn’t always use the best judgment, definitely is not the best judge of character but he is a good guy.

“He has a big heart and tries to see the best in people ALL THE TIME! even when everyone else is telling him that the person is a psycho or that the person can’t be trusted.

“He thinks everyone deserves a second chance and has a hard time hurting people’s feelings and it takes him getting burned to learn.”

A week ago Tuesday, Annie Le was murdered. Thereafter on Friday, Hromadka blogged:

“Who are you to judge the life I live? I know I’m not perfect and I don’t live to be, but before you start pointing fingers make sure your hands are clean!!”

Raymond Clark was reportedly put into handcuffs at his Middletown, Conn. apartment at 10:30 pm. While Clark was taken in for questioning , police were quick to clarify - this is not an arrest:

“We are looking for DNA and physical evidence. This is not an arrest warrant, this is a search warrant. We don’t know if he is cooperating or not. If he doesn’t comply with this search warrant, he will be arrested.”

The Le family issued a statement late tonight:

“The entire Yale community as well as our extended families and friends have been very supportive, helpful and caring. Our loss would have been immeasurably more difficult to cope with without their support.”

The Raymond Clark wedding website as of Tuesday night, however, appears void of any content.

mtv awards kanye west

mtv awards kanye west

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped up, leaving behind a bevy of memorable moments, legendary performances and at least one heel turn by a superstar. But while the show onstage was mind-blowing, the behind-the-scenes events were just as enthralling. The MTV News staff was stationed all over the backstage area keeping track of everyone's comings and goings.

Of course, the moment that everybody is talking about is Kanye West's interruption during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech. West stormed the stage, snatched the microphone from Swift's hand and began ranting about how much better Beyoncé's video was. But what you didn't see was that Kanye and girlfriend Amber Rose were both taking pulls from a bottle of Hennessy before the show. Once West was taken offstage, he was booed vociferously and flipped off the crowd. As he made his way back to his seat, Pink walked by him, shook her head in disgust and had to be escorted away by security. Later, one MTV staffer spoke to a security guard, who confirmed that West left the building early. And following the outburst, Perez Hilton and Paramore's Hayley Williams tried to start a "#TeamTaylor" trend on Twitter.

But the night wasn't just about Kanye West, as there were plenty of other memorable moments behind the scenes. Following Britney Spears' win for Best Pop Video (and her in-absentia acceptance speech), the members of Cobra Starship (who were also nominated) were outraged. In fact, they tore up their tickets in disgust the whole time Britney's acceptance video played. "We woulda at least showed up!" frontman Gabe Saporta shouted. He then pulled a huge flask out of his breast pocket and took a drink. Later, Saporta tweeted, "How they gonna give the award to B. Spears if she can't even take the time out to show up?"

Of course, the evening had some positive — if not unusual — moments as well. One of the big stories of the night was Lady Gaga, who made multiple costume changes and was generally strange. She didn't really talk to anybody (save for her profanity-laced acceptance speech) and walked with an exaggerated limp. And she even left parts of herself behind: At one moment, an MTV News correspondent realized that the angel wings Gaga wore during her "Paparazzi" performance were hanging on a hook backstage.

Who was the most popular member of the backstage contingent? That would be "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson, who must be used to being the center of attention no matter where he is. But following his presentation of the "New Moon" trailer with castmates Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, he was able to retire backstage for a few moments of silence, sipping a beer and nodding his head to BeyoncĂ©'s killer performance. No matter where you were standing — onstage, in the dressing rooms, in the audience or on your couch at home — the 2009 Video Music Awards provided enough great moments to tide you over until the 2010 show.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards might have wrapped, but the party is far from over. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes updates, party reports and much more.

janet jackson 2009 vma performance

Janet Jackson paid loving tribute to her late brother Michael at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, dancing along with a projection of MJ as their duet "Scream" played on the big screen. The dramatic opening of the show, which included a moving speech from Madonna, was just her first tip of the fedora to Michael, though.

A short time later, Janet gave the ultimate thank you to her beloved sibling by posting a new single, "Make Me," on her Web site. The song, seemingly the first single from her upcoming album, reportedly due out in early 2010, is an uptempo dance jam with a chorus that pays loving tribute to MJ's iconic 1979 solo single "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."

Easing up on the darker S&M themes of her recent albums, "Make Me" is a fun, breezy tune with an elastic disco beat in which Jackson teases the object of her obsession to "go on get up and shake your body," promising "we're gonna have a good time."

The chorus twists Michael's refrain into a Janet-worthy, sexy come-on, with the lyrics, "Don't stop 'til you get it up," as she entices her man to join her on the dance floor and shake it until the morning light. "Baby can you move, make me groove/ Show me what you do, make me move/ Baby can you move, make me groove/ Show me what you can do, make me move," she sings in the ear-candy hook, adding one of her signature breathy come-ons later in the tune to seal the deal. "If you feel like you can get it tonight," she coos. "But first you gotta make me say ... Oooohhh."

On her Twitter page, Jackson explained the gift-wrapped look of the "Make Me" stream on her site. "Thank u for ur endless love n support! I hope u guys enjoyed us tonight. It was very special for me n I have a very special gift for all of u."

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards might have wrapped, but the party is far from over. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes updates, party reports and much more.

911 attack

911 attack

Eight years after the attacks that led to the war in Afghanistan, President Obama -- the war's new commander in chief -- commemorated his first 9/11 anniversary as president with a moment of silence at the White House and remarks at the Pentagon.

Obama attended a small, private gathering of victims' families at the Pentagon and laid a wreath at the outdoor memorial with Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

"Eight Septembers have come and gone. Nearly 3,000 days have passed; almost one for each of those taken from us," he said on a cool, rainy day in the Washington area. "But no turning of the season can diminish the pain and the loss of that day. No passage of time and no dark skies can ever dull the meaning of this moment."

The president spoke directly to the families of victims gathered for a memorial service at the Pentagon. "[N]o words can ease the ache of your heart. No deeds can fill the empty places in your homes," he said. "But on this day and all that follow, you may find solace in the memory of those you loved and know that you have the unending support of the American people."

Earlier today the president and first lady Michelle Obama marked a moment of silence with staff at the White House at 8:46 a.m., the moment the first plane struck the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Obama signed an order earlier this year declaring Sept. 11 as a national day of service and said that today Americans can "summon once more that ordinary goodness of America to serve our communities, to strengthen our country and to better our world."

"On a day when others sought to sap our confidence, let us renew our common purpose; let us remember how we came together as one nation, as one people, as Americans, united not only in our grief but in our resolve to stand with one another, to stand up for the country we all love," the president said.

Last year, 20,000 people attended the dedication of the Pentagon memorial where 184 benches with the names of each victim mark the spot where American Airlines flight 77 slammed into the building killing 59 on the plane and 125 on the ground.

The anniversary is a poignant one for Obama, who was just an Illinois state legislator in 2001. Little did he know that eight years later Osama Bin Laden would still be on the run, while the mastermind of the attacks, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, would be growing old in a Guantanamo prison cell.

The president Thursday promised to "apprehend all those who perpetrated these heinous crimes, seek justice for those who were killed and defend against all threats to our national security."

Central to that effort is the war in Afghanistan, which Obama has called a "war of necessity" and to which he has pledged more resources.

But with conditions there worse than ever and American casualties in August, the highest since the war began, the president is now faced with the likely prospect of U.S. commanders asking for tens of thousands of more troops.

Whether he will send them is far from certain. The White House remains deeply divided on the issue and support in Congress for a troop increase appears to be slim.

On the eve of today's anniversary, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., had blunt words about the prospect of shipping even more Americans to war, saying, "I don't think there's a great deal of support for sending more troops to Afghanistan, in the country or the Congress."

Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has also expressed skepticism about sending more combat troops until the U.S. does more to train Afghan security forces.

At a park near ground zero in New York today, volunteers who supported the recovery effort will join family members and rescue workers to read the 2,752 names of victims and mark four moments of silence -- for when the planes struck each tower and for when each tower collapsed.

In New York City, Vice President Joe Biden laid flowers in a reflecting pool at a memorial site near ground zero and spoke to the victims' families gathered in remembrance.

"There's a special fraternity of those of us who've lost spouses and children," said Biden whose daughter and first wife died in a 1972 automobile accident. "But there is also one thing all Americans know to be true and which we remember most when we come to this site: in our jobs and in our sorrows, we know we belong to one another."

Biden, who was joined by his wife Jill, read a quote from the poet Mary Oliver about loss and recovery.

Meanwhile, construction of memorial grounds and the U.S. National September 11 Museum continues at ground zero, which planners say will be open to the public by Sept. 11, 2012. Officials called for public participation Thursday in building the museum's collection by submitting images, video and personal stories to the institution's Web site www.911history.org.

In rural western Pennsylvania, the National Park Service is preparing to break ground on the Flight 93 National Memorial, replacing a temporary memorial at the site where hijacked flight United 93 crashed into a field. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell is expected to speak to family and friends of the 40 victims of United 93 at a ceremony at the crash site today.

This is the first year Sept. 11 has been declared a national day of service, and many Americans across the country have planned community improvement projects and remembrance ceremonies to mark the day.

"We must build a culture of resiliency and guard against complacency, so we are better prepared for terrorist attacks or disasters of any kind," said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

"By serving our communities and our country today and throughout the year, we commemorate our past while also preparing for our future," she said.

Most adults can remember very vividly where they were and what they were doing; just as those did who experienced news such as the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the JFK assassination, the Cuban crisis, and when Elvis died.
But more recently, eight years ago, we can still see in our mind’s eyes the smoke, the ash, the buildings falling down like a sand castles toppled by a wave. We can vividly call to our remembrance the faces – the frantic faces of those fleeing the scene – the faces of those standing and looking up with shock and disbelief; and the faces of people running frantically through the rubble with pictures in their hands begging that someone had news of their loved ones – the faces of the policemen and the firemen and the other volunteers.
So easily we can remember that our nation was brought to her knees temporally seeking the face of God. As the days passed, we loved each other more – we hugged each other and reverenced each other more. Flags were flying at every home and every street corner and the news carried the heartbreaking stories all those who had lost a loved one – the many funerals attended – the many men and women widowed; and children orphaned – some who had not yet been born.
People from all walks of life were brought together as brothers and sisters – and then an anger rose up in the hearts of young men who joined the military devoting themselves to the love of God and country; and how can we forget the thousands who have died and many more thousands who are severely wounded. We saw the faces of loved ones near a flag draped coffin – we have seen the faces of pain from physical and emotional wounds.
The churches were filled that next Sunday seeking God’s forgiveness for individual and collective sins as a country. And then the stories began to emerge of the thousands of acts of heroism and self sacrifice – one giving their life to help another – some who could have escaped the falling buildings; but would not leave their incapacitated fellow employees. The fireman running into the buildings past those fleeing the building. Our emotions on tender hooks for weeks and months to come. Who can forget all of our elected officials who stood to the task over and beyond the call of duty – Mayor Giuliani and President Bush? And now eight years later we are once again at each other’s throats and how soon we forget a President who kept us safe the next eight years with his strength, courage and determination to lead a broken nation to a place of safety and healing. Who can forget the fortitude he had while being criticized and attacked; and the dignity he and Mrs. Bush brought to the White House.
Where were you when the world stopped turning? Where are you now? After eight years has there been a lingering desire in your heart to see a united America, a stable America – or just as soon see all the buildings crumble as to work hard to make a difference. We still have soldiers fighting and dying. Do you support them with more than just rhetoric? We still have homeless, hopeless, and hungry faces in our lives – what are we doing about it? Are we holding fast to the experience of renewal this country faced when we saw elected officials stand on the Capitol steps and sing “God Bless America,” unashamedly? And where are they now?
We saw the working man and the movie star come together to raise money for the families left in devastation because of their deeply personal loss that we all felt as our own personal loss.
Where will you be this Friday September 11, 2009 – eight years later? Are you a better person? Are you working to claim America back as one nation under God? Are you a better parent, teacher, or preacher – are you determined to never forget that day when the world stopped turning.
The Presidential Prayer Team has dedicated this September 11 - this Friday - as a day to push back complacency and to encourage prayer around the country for our leaders, our President, and our troops. Please mark your calendar now to join us for a special day, this Friday, September 11, 2009. http://www.presidentialprayerteam.org/
Some one still cares and wrote this e-mail that has been circulating around.
“On Friday, September 11th, 2009, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States . Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this eighth anniversary of one of our country's worst tragedies. We do this to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends, and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.
In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds.”
We heard the songs and tributes from different artists; but none touched our hearts any more than Alan Jackson’s song and video “Where were you when the world stopped turning?”
Listen once again. May your heart be as stirred today as it was the first time you heard this. May you once again fly that flag of freedom and bend those knees once again in prayer asking once again that God would bless this country just one more time?
Remember the gifts of God – faith, hope and love and the greatest of these is love.
Many people today are hurting from poverty, foreclosures, job loss, family strife, and serious illnesses. Where are you in the lives of these people? There is little we can do for the thousands who left this earth that day – but these people are still with us. Let us honor the living in memorial to the dead. Where were you then? And where are you now? Where was America then and where is she now?
Matthew 25: 42-45
For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'
"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'
"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'
Pick one of the charities on the bottom right and support it – or find one of your own; or cut someone’s lawn, or take a bowl of soup to a sick neighbor, find something to do this Friday, September 11, 2009 and do it to honor those who perished that day and for a country that will perish without God and love. Adopt a soldier who defends our country. http://soldiersangels.org At this writing, there were 1,297 soldiers who have signed up to be adopted – will you reach out to one? Will you do one of the projects they offer - to bring love, encouragement and appreciation to a soldier so far from home? That is one way we can honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
But know remember back as you listen to Alan Jackson’s song – Where were you?

As everyone knows, today is the 8th year anniversary of the terrible 9/11 attacks. Many people, companies and organizations are doing things to remember the day. A lot of people are asking why there is no logo from Google for today. The quick answer is that Google does not do Google Doodles (aka logos) for sad days like this, they typically only do these types of logos for happier occasions.

But that does not mean Google is not doing anything. They have partnered up with several organizations and companies to bring together a web site named Make History at 911history.org. The site has a storytelling sharing tool that uses the Google Maps API to display Google’s Street Views. It allows “people to place and then share their photos and videos in geographical context, collectively piecing together the history that was witnessed, one photo and video at a time,” Google said. The site is also hosted on Google’s cloud computing environment, Google App Engine.

On the logo front, both Microsoft Bing & Ask.com have used meaningful background images for their home pages. Here are pictures:

Clearly, the Yahoo home page has news and images for the day. Plus Gary Price at ResourceShelf has compiled a comprehensive list of how the Internet is remembering the day.
