Perhaps the Erin Andrews peephole video case is now solved? That's certainly the hope of the FBI as they have announced the arrest of Michael David Barrett over the whole tawdry affair.

The backgound is that Erin Andrews, the touchline correspondent for the sports channel ESPN, was filmed secretly in her hotel room. She was naked and doing all of the usual things one might do unobserved in a hotel room, brushing her hair, getting ready to get dressed and so on. This tape was then released onto the internet and became known as the Erin Andrews peephole video.

Millions attempted to view the video and almost as many were taken in by phishers and spoofers trying to infect their computers with trojans.

While it's a little early to call the case solved, for an arrest and charging is not the same as proving that the matter is solved, it certainly seems like the FBI believe they have their man.

As AP reports:

A Chicago-area man arrested at O'Hare airport who is accused of taping surreptitious nude videos of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews was due to appear in federal court late Saturday morning, authorities said. Michael David Barrett was arrested Friday night as he arrived on a flight from Buffalo, N.Y., the FBI said. He faces federal charges of interstate stalking for taking the videos, trying to sell them to celebrity Web site TMZ and posting the videos online, the FBI said in a statement.

Two further things should be noted. The first is that Erin Andrews intends to file civil suits against those who broadcast the peephole videos or stills from them: that is going to leave an awful lot of media outlets worried.

The second is that Michael Barrett came under suspicion because he tried to sell the peephole videos to the gossip website TMZ: who prompty informed the authorities. Well done to TMZ there.

Although, can anyone remember, did TMZ run the video or post any of the stills?
