Junior middleweight boxer Jimmy Lange (29-3-2, 20 KOs) has a new opponent for the World Boxing Council (WBC) United States National Boxing Championship (USNBC) Super Welterweight (154-pounds) championship fight coming to the Patriot Center on May 2. After his previously-confirmed challenger (Ryan Davis) unexpectedly backed out, Ice Promotions officials confirmed that Frank Houghtaling (19-15-5, 4 KOs) of Albany, N.Y., had accepted to fight the popular Great Falls, Va. boxer in a 12-round Main Event title fight.

Houghtaling has won three regional titles and fought tough competition during his career, including a victory over former world champion Livingstone Bramble. The cagey veteran was stopped by Matthew Hutton in the seventh round of their IBF International Welterweight title bout two years ago and dropped a 10-round decision to former world champion Sharmbra Mitchell at DC’s Lincoln Theatre.

Lange, a Bishop O’Connell High graduate (ArlingtoJustify Fulln), rose to 21-1-1 over his first five years, earning an unmatched regional following in the local area. In 2003, he scored high marks and won fans at the national stage with his impressive third-round TKO of former WBF light heavyweight champion Homer Gibbins live on ESPN2’s Tuesday Night Fights. His fame rose to new heights as a "Fan Favorite" on season one of the boxing TV series "The Contender," with hosts Sylvester Stallone and "Sugar" Ray Leonard. Since the show, Lange has headlined all six pro cards held at the Patriot Center, drawing more than 5,000 fans to each. In 2007, he captured the WBC’s 154-pound Continental Americas’ championship belt with an eight-round TKO rematch win over Fontaine Cabell.

An exciting fight card featuring up to 10 bouts of top professional local and regional boxers will be showcased on May 2. For tickets, call 703-573-SEAT.

The SYA Storm, an under-10 girls’ soccer team from Fairfax County, won the prestigious Jefferson Cup in Richmond on March 22 in a 2-1 overtime victory against another Northern Virginia club, the Loudoun Red 98 team.

Sponsored by the Keller Williams Fairfax Gateway Realtor group, the Storm beat out top-ranked teams from Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina for the championship. Among the 398 girls teams competing across nine age groups in the nationally ranked youth soccer tournament, the SYA Storm was the only club from Fairfax County — and only one of two teams from Virginia – to win a championship division.
First in its group after three preliminary round matches, the
SYA Storm advanced to the semifinals game against the HBC Impact 98 from Huntington, N.Y. A successful penalty kick in the last few minutes of the game clinched the win to send the team into the championship against Loudoun Red 98.

Trailing Loudoun 1-0 with three minutes left in a tough-fought finals match, Storm coach Kurt Gordon switched his lineup to a pressing offensive attack. Oak Hill's Caroline Kulczycky, who had played the entire game on defense, was substituted in as a striker after a quick water break.

"Before she went back onto the field, I told Caroline that this was a ‘right here, right now’ moment and that she needed to do her best to make something happen," said Gordon. "I guess my pep talk worked."
With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Kulczycky propelled the Storm into overtime by fighting off defenders near Loudoun's goal and nailing a shot into the upper left corner of the net from eight yards out. Then, in the first of two five-minute overtime periods, a redirected corner kick
pushed the Storm into the lead and to victory.

The SYA Storm (www.syastorm.com) now prepares for its fourth season in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League (WAGS). The team is currently undefeated in three seasons of WAGS play, posting a record of 25 wins, two ties, and no losses with 179 goals for and nine goals against. Kulczycky, who joined the team in the Fall 2008 season, was the Storm's co-leading scorer with 10 goals
